Social Exclusivity, Contradicting I Know.

In a world filled with hundreds of thousands of blogs for any topic imaginable, I began thinking about what attracts an individual to one social medium versus another. Is it simply the new fad or possibly an industry specific forum? I know my team and I are all proponents of assorted means of social media management, but at the end of the day, each blog, forum, and industry specific group is for naught without the creative expression of its followers. (Case in point, below a creative late night design session with the team. Don’t hate.)

As of recent though, the explosion of the social media has in some way clouded the quality of the content available. Certainly, it has almost extinguished whatever exclusivity there was to begin with. Having majored in business, I am no stranger to the circumstances that can force services into releasing a public platform, but I do long for a perpetual exclusive group of talented, professional people to share my thoughts with and not have them scattered amongst the billions of threads created daily. I’m a firm advocate that through positive criticism, growth is achieved.

In short, whether you’re a designer, mechanic, artist and anything in between, take the time to source out meaningful social outlets, even if it includes 40’s with your friends.

Cheers,

Tony

Grab Your Iron, And Start Branding!

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the term "branding"? Chances are you're quick to paint a mental picture of all things marketing from a logo, all the way through action figures (depending on your product of choice), forgetting that roughly one hundred years ago branding was nothing more than marking livestock to show ownership.

Though something as frontier as cattle-branding is seemingly worlds away from what we have come to know as strategic branding, it is actually one in the same in today's marketplace. With the advent of Web 2.0, and the continuing evolution of social networking, specifically, the advent of twitter, we are seeing more and more that people from all walks of business are staking their place in their respective markets by turning their actual name into their own personal brand.

Anthony Pipta - Business Logo

Jason Spaniol - Business Logo

Bringing this concept of personal strategic branding full circle, is the apparent incorporation of tattoos as not only a medium for self expression, but also, you guessed it, branding. A prime example of this practice, is one of my favorite human beings, professional skateboarder, Mike Vallely. In 1997 Mike set a precedent by successfully transforming a simple lightning bolt from matching tattoos on his forearms to what would become his logo (or brand, if you will), for the rest of his (continuous) career.

So my question is simple. If "design is all about how we live" -@pipta, is branding now all about who we are?

Cheers,
Jason

Emotion Inspired Through Design

I have always found a great deal of my passion in life is for inanimate objects. For some, these items are simply nothing more than just a random passing that will soon subside in the blur of life. However, for individuals that have learned to appreciate either the beauty, elegance, craftsmanship, attention to detail or the resulting visceral experience, often times we develop an inherent sense of relation to these objects. There are times we build what seems to be a tangible connection through derived functions but really the inspiration is conceived through cohesive design that marries the relationship of form and function. Its truly fortunate that we as humans are not bound by a single interpretation but can revel in the limitless boundaries of design.
