Fishing Charter Website and Booking Engine
Rookie Mistakes Fishing Charters is Captain Brice O’Malley’s charter business on Kent Island, Maryland, a short run from Annapolis, fishing the Chesapeake Bay and the nearshore Atlantic. We designed and built a custom WordPress theme with an online booking system built in, so anglers can request trips right on the site and the captain can approve, schedule and manage every booking in one place, with no third-party booking platform and no per-booking fees.

The challenge
A charter captain who needed booking that works the way he does: approval first, phone friendly, and on his own site.
Charter fishing on the Chesapeake Bay doesn’t fit the instant-checkout model most booking platforms are built around. Weather, tides, seasons and the captain’s own schedule decide what can actually run, and a single boat can go out as a full-day charter, a morning or afternoon half day, or with shared walk-on seats sold one at a time. Plenty of bookings still come in by phone or text.
The off-the-shelf options take a cut of every booking and keep the customer relationship on someone else’s platform. Rookie Mistakes needed a modern website that showed off the trips and the experience to anglers across Maryland, Annapolis, Baltimore and D.C., and a booking system that let Captain Brice say yes or no to every request without ever double-booking the boat.
What we built
A custom WordPress theme with an approval-first booking engine, a captain’s calendar and an API ready for mobile.
A site built around the trips. Every charter and walk-on has its own trip page with pricing, seasons and booking options, organized by trip type and ordered the way the captain wants them on the Trips and Book pages. A month-by-month seasons chart shows what’s biting on the Bay and nearshore. Trips that are booked by phone show a call-and-text panel and a walk-on email list signup instead of a booking form, so they still turn into leads. Everything is managed through structured fields built on Secure Custom Fields, with no page builder.
Approval-first online booking. Anglers pick a trip, date and time and send a request. The system knows which days are already taken by full-day, morning or afternoon trips, tracks shared walk-on seats separately, and won’t let a confirmed booking collide with another booking or with a day the captain has blocked off. The captain approves or declines from the dashboard, and the customer gets a branded email with a link to review their booking.
Tools for the captain. A booking calendar shows every confirmed and pending trip and lets the captain block days for weather, maintenance or time off. An Add booking screen handles phone and text bookings, so the calendar stays the single source of truth, and every status change is logged on the booking.
Fast and protected. Lean, minified CSS and JavaScript keep pages quick on a phone at the dock, and Cloudflare Turnstile protects the booking and contact forms without making customers solve puzzles.
A clean move from the old site. We migrated the existing blog posts and SEO settings from the previous WordPress site so content and search rankings carried over at launch.
Ready for mobile. The theme includes a secure REST API for bookings, the calendar and blocked days, laying the groundwork for a companion app that lets the captain manage bookings from the water.
